Now I know glitches aren’t always spooky, and aren’t as interesting as ghostly beings who want to mess with me (I swear I can hear Violet laughing at me right now). But some glitches have the tendency to be disturbing in some way.
Quick back-story: When the first Pokemon games came out, one of my friends finished it up his Red Version and gave it to me for $5.00. I had Blue Version already but I was curious what changes were made in the game. So I bought it from him and realized it was in rough shape. It was slightly damaged, no big deal though, it still worked.
Well, this game worked, and occasionally froze on me from time to time. But I still managed to complete it after making a habit of saving often. But sometimes, when the game froze, it seemed to do it in the most incredible timing I have ever seen. You’ll see what I mean.
Frozen Glitch 1: I was fighting a Dewgong with my Blastoise. It used Ice Beam and my Blastoise got frozen. The game freezes with the text “Blastoise was frozen!” still on screen. That made me shiver a bit.
Frozen Glitch 2: I was fighting an Onix with my Blastoise. Onix used Screech and the animation played out halfway when my game froze. The animation wasn’t the creepy part, the screech sound was looping on itself which made me throw my headphones off.
Frozen Glitch 3: I was fighting a Fearow with a Arbok. The Fearow used Leer and the game froze when the screen inverts the colors on the screen for the Leer animation, or I guess effect in this case. Gen. 1 Leer burned into my mind forever.
There weren’t many scary freezing glitches but these 3 were the one that stood out the most.
My friend called me and asked for the Red game back, I asked for my $5.00 back. He said he couldn’t pay me (liar). After a few minutes of arguing with him, I finally agreed to give it back at school during lunch time. Knowing that he’d check Continue before starting a new game, I caught 6 Missingno since another friend taught me about how to get them earlier and I was fascinated by this glitchy Pokemon. I named them:
All six of them were in my current party and I flew to Lavender Town and entered the Pokemon Tower where I saved and quit. My friend didn’t know about Missingno and was in for a big surprise. The look on his face when he saw them and their names made him drop the Gameboy. Coincidentally, the game froze on the Pokemon Party screen. Like I said before, incredible timing.
