Decaying Gold

The story is fiction, meaning it never happened. It was written with the intent of scaring the reader.

I had been playing Pokemon since the original Red, Blue and Yellow came out, so it was nothing new when I heard of the arrival of Pokemon Black and White.

Everyone was getting pumped for Black and white, while I sat on the sidelines, playing my HeartGold. Now, I have heard of the stories of ‘haunted games’ and ‘lavender town syndrome’. I don’t believe in any of them, but they always perked my curiosity. As of late, I had been hanging around the kanto region in HG, looking for Pokemon that i haven’t caught yet, trying to stay away from, and avoid, using the pal-park. Where most find it cheating to use it, I just find it too damned annoying to hunt for them again. While I was searching in the grass, all I had in my team was my level 73, male Typhlosion, whom I named Phlo. I trekked through the grass, and caught a few Pokemon. A level 6 male Ekans, level 10 female Nidoran♀, and a level 5 female geodude, though I already had one, I just got bored and caught it anyways.

After about another 30 minutes, I got a call from Professor Elm, which wasn’t odd, as he had called me before, but this time was… different, so say the least. “I have an… egg… it doesn’t seem… normal, would you take it?” *click* ‘Odd’ I thought, ‘Why would the programmers add that in there…’ but, I just shrugged it off and walked to elms lab, which I didn’t mind doing at all, I liked watching Phlo follow me, was nostalgic of Pokemon Yellow and how Pikachu followed you. After a few minutes, I arrived at elms lab and walked up to the door *thud thud* I heard as I couldn’t even get into the lab, as it seemed the door was locked. I tried to press A, but nothing. I figured that I had already wasted enough time, so I went back to what I was doing before. Just as I got to the beginning of the route, Elm rushed at me, almost as if he had seen something terribly awful ”Take it! Get rid of it, I don’t care what you do with it, JUST TAKE THIS CURSED THING FROM ME!” he said, leaving something on the ground. I looked closer at my DS screen, seeing a small sprite that looked like the egg from the Pokemon team menu, before picking it up, I turned to Phlo and pressed A, a question mark showed above his head, then an emote of fear “Phlo seems to want to run away…” it said. I looked at the text, thinking that this wasn’t supposed to be part of the game, and I know that it wasn’t a hacked version of it, as I had bought it from Walmart the day it hit shelves. I pressed A again on Phlo, a fear emote showing again, “Phlo seems to be looking at the egg in fear.” Phlo had moved past me, another question mark emote appearing pver his head “Phlo sniffed the egg. Phlo shuddered and cried out in fear” *TYPHLOOO!* Phlo then ran back behind me. It all seemed odd, but shrugging it off yet again, I turned to the egg and picked it up, though, only silence filled the air as a dialog popped up “Lilly recieved ???”‘What? What is ???…’ I thought, pressing the pokemon menu via the touchpad on my DS, it brought me to my Team Roster. In the main was Phlo, who was suddenly paralyzed, and the egg… or… at least it looked like an egg. I clicked it and pressed summery, bringing me to the stats menu.

The egg wasn’t the normal sprite, as its shell looked black, with cracks and sickly red spots erratically placed allover its surface, and not the kind of spots that you’d expect from a normal egg either. They looked like paint or… blood, had been dripped along its surface, then after getting a little tacky, someone had tried to scrub them off. It was an eerie image to say the least. I checked the status of its hatch time, and it said the normal, “Sounds can be heard from inside, its about to hatch!” I closed the menu, before trying to hatch this, sick, looking egg, I talked to Phlo, the fear and paralyzed emotes popped up, “Phlo is paralyzed in fear…” I found this odd, and when I tried to use a full restore on him “It won’t have any effect…” This little bit i found a little freaky, but I moved on and walked through the route about 2 or 3 time. Nothing happened. Walked the route again, and nothing. After another 10 or so rounds of walking up and down the route, it finally hatched. It was a charmander, it looked fairly normal, except it was a female, and upon further looking at the sprite, its skin was a dull orange with black like spot-ish globs seeming to infest its skin, its tail lay limp on the ground, flame looked as though it was barely alive.

I hurried over to the Pokemon center, quickly trying to heal my Pokemon, thinking that it would somehow help with Phlo’s paralysis and with Charmander, whom I named Phoenix. Much to my surprise… it did not help in the least, in fact, as I got my team back from the nurse, I got the oddest conversation “Your Charmander is very Ill… the poor creature won’t even respond to any treatment and has injured itself. I am afraid that it is affecting your Typhlosion as well…” after she stopped talking, I hurried to look at my team. I clicked on Phlo, bringing up his stats… it wasn’t good… it was horrifying… Phlo’s eyes held a worn look to them, as if he had fought to near exhaustion. His fur seemed to have the same spotted look as Phoenix’s as well. I decided to press down on the D-pad, bringing up Phoenix’s stats. I was shocked at what I saw. Her skin was a sickly grey-ish orange. flame had completely gone out, her eyes looked as though they had fallen out, leaving blackened and bloody sockets behind. A large gash, like the skin had been slashed open with a claw. I quickly closed out of the menu, a little freaked out. I ran to the nearest route, Phlo following behind, every few minutes, I heard him cry out, as though he was in pain. As soon as I got to the wild grass, i encountered a wild drowzee, but instead of sending out Phlo, Phoenix jumped out “Go Phoenix!” I saw pop up. I checked the attacks, and all but one was normal for the type of Pokemon she was. the last one wasn’t even a real move. Ember, Scratch, Growl and Entomb. I tried to use the other moves, but only entomb had the PP to use it. So I used it “1 hit-KO” odd… “Enemy Drowzee has died” wait… what?… “Phoenix was hit with recoil” Okay… “Phoenix has died” ‘What the HELL!?’ I thought. Now, this was really starting to freak me the hell out of me.

As the battle screen faded, I checked out my team, and Phoenix was still in my party. I checked Phlo, he had bald spots, as though his fur fell out, blood seemping from some open sores, and his eyes seemed to have rotted out of his skull, his head hung low. My gut churned at the sight. I then checked Phoenix, that nearly made me vomit… Her skin was decaying, flesh seemed to had fallen off in chunks as it lay at her feet, her tail having flesh missing from it as well. She was on all fours, crying blood. I quickly closed the menu and ran to the Pokemon Center, I talked to the nurse “I’m sorry… your Pokemon are doomed. There is nothing anyone can do for you now… you should be ashamed…” I was so fucking confused and sick to my stomach. I went to another Pokemon center and talked to the nurse there “I heard about you… your starting to look Ill as well…” What the fuck did she mean? then it hit me, Check your trainer card and that is just what I did, and the sight made me drop my DS and rush to the bathroom to vomit. My trainer, who was female, was standing there, head low, shoulders sloped in a shamed look, clothing degrading and skin sickly grey, her hands bloody, tears streaming down her face. A look of sorrow and shame across her face. I closed the menu as soon as I gained my wits to even touch the game and walked back to Elms lab. The town seemed desolate, alone, dead… I walked to the lab, it was still locked, this time I tried his home, it was open, and he was inside.

He rushed to me, pushing me to the back of the house. “You kept the egg… didn’t you..”

-> Yes.

No.

“Yes…”

“I told you to get rid of it… your such a fool for keeping it.”

Suddenly, I lost control of the game, Elm pacing back and forth…

Phoenix: “you chose this…”

Phlo: “you should have ran when I told you Master…”

Phoenix: “pain… that is all i know… pain… you should have smashed it… walked away… let me decay… you chose to kill me… slowly…”

Phlo: “now i am suffering… and now Master is turning as well”

Phoenix: “you feel the pain too, don’t you…”

Elm: You are becoming affected, and I am sure Typhlosion is as well. If you go to lavender town in kanto, I am sure you can bury that cursed and decaying charmander before its too late.

Phoenix: “NO, DO NOT LISTEN TO HIM, KILL HIM NOW!!!”

Suddenly the screen when black…

???: _{“what have I done…”}

Phoenix: “its done…”

???: _{“why… why did you make me do it… he didn’t do-“}

Phoenix: “must keep everything silent… must let the pain entomb you…”

Phlo: “i…its… ov…er m…master……”

The screen came back on, but now I was in a dark forest, crawling. I checked my trainer card, my trainer’s legs crudely lopped off with a face holding more terror then I have ever seen, her skin rotting off, blood allover her hands and chest. I no longer had that cursed and decayed charmander in my team, I checked phlo, he had died, body decayed and yet, he was still alive in a sense, as he had 1hp left, he was on all fours, no expression but pain in his face. I exited the menu and continued to crawl.

Phlo: “she’s coming….”

Lilly: _“…”

Phlo: “we can’t escape…”

Lilly: _{“… can’t… crawl anymore…”}

Phlo: “m…master…. I don’t b…blame you…”

Lilly: _{“i… k..killed… him…”}

Phlo: “stop… she’s here… its over….”

Phoenix: “What do you think your doing, running away? You killed me, you made me suffer… die.”

*SNAP… CRASH…*

Just as a horrid cry came from my DS’s speakers, the system shut itself off.

I turned it back on, and got to the menu and clicked continue.

“You have died, you cannot continue.”

I stopped playing HeartGold for almost a year after that, didn’t even bother to delete the save file. When I finally got the courage to find it and actually boot it up, I clicked continue, dreading what it would say.

“You have died, you cannot continue.”

Same as last time… well, I guess I will try to create a new game. I tried to delete the save

“You must continue a new life”

I found this a little odd, but went to the “New game” option and surprisingly enough, it worked, bringing up “1 year later…” ‘What?’ I thought.

-> Yes.

No.

I clicked yes.

“She was the cause of elm’s death, her voice was emanated through a poor weak trainer who used her to murder him. Her Typhlosion lying next to her, holding his trainer as half of his body was gone, fighting to protect her from the evil that tore them both apart, limb from limb. My Lilly and Phlo rest, and the corrupted and decaying Charmander be brought to its demise.”

At this point, I was in tears as I read the text. I just wanted it to be over so i could go back to playing the game normally.

“Would you like to end your journey now?”

-> Yes.

No.

I clicked yes, the screen showing two graves, the mother standing between both of them.

“Rest in peace my child and her beloved pet…”

Then the screen went to the menu

“Deleting save data, please don’t turn off the power”

I replayed that game 100% through… whatever that sick joke was… it never happened again…
