Cursed Togepi

I had just gotten Pokemon Crystal, a game I’d been wanting to play for ages, ever since I’d seen my friend play it, and quickly got to playing it, excitement fueling my mind. I had never played the game before, so I didn’t know what to expect-Or, more specifically, how to know if something was wrong. I booted it up and looked at the intro; It was normal, the same battle you’d expect in any old crystal version. I got to the selection screen, clicked ‘New Game’, and an odd message came up “Are you sure?” Not knowing if it was supposed to happen or not, I went along with it- But…I DID think it was a bit…’Creepy?’ I guess. I mean, it was a kids game, why include such an ominous text? Still, I shrugged it off. My over reactive imagination wasn’t going to stop from playing this!

The game gave me a choice of “YES/NO?”, I pressed on and selected “YES”, and the game responded with an ominous response of “We warned you.” Shrugging this off as well, I started the game.

Everything seemed fairly normal; I went through the normal tutorial, picked my starter,Cyndaquil, battled mt rival- Customary intro. Soon, I reached the town in which you get the egg with togepi in it and decided to immediately hatch him, and was rewarded with a togepi before I even reached the gym-Which, I dominated with ease thanks to my quilava.

But thats besides the point.

I decided that I needed to train my new togepi, so I headed to a patch of grass across from the Ruins of Alph, and trained her. Seeing that she didn’t have any good moves yet, I had to switch her out for every battle, and was rewarded when she quickly learned Metronome. Thrilled, I sent her out for more training, and me, not knowing what it did, tested it out.

I saw that, apparently, Metronome makes Togepi use a random move- A move that she didn’t know (Or even could learn) At first, I was confused, but I just shrugged it off and decided that it was a good thing.

I won every battle with ease with her.

It almost seemed as if Metronome always used the exact right moves everytime- Despite being completely random. She always one hit KO’d a pokemon, making training a brease.

Eventually, I decided that I should train my other pokemon, and so I stopped using her. I caught some other pokemon, sometimes using Togepi against trainers. I hadn’t used her in a while, now, and so I realized that I needed to train her, seeing as she was now seriously underleveled. I sent her into a battle. I selected Metronome yet again, and a text came up reading

“TOGEPI USED METRONOME.”

“TOGEPI USED PERISH SONG”

The music went distorted for a second as the game, and I got a bit worried. Metronome had never used perish song before! But, what worried me even more was the fact that when the little animation went off for the move, so did a little jingle-Sickingly sweet, with a pitchy drop off. I tried to calm myself-Who, for some reason, had gone into hysterics. Now, I’m not known to panic, or really even get scared, but for whatever reason, this little thing sent me waves of panic- By telling myself that it was probably just something special they had added in for Crystal. After all, they were always special and new things for each game…Right…?

The coutdown started with a new textbox which I’d never seen for this move.

“The countdown starts for every party that hears the cry of the angel of death.

The countdown is three.”

Well thats….Unnerving…Rather…Detailed for a game…A kids game…

I tried using Metronome again, it was just one pokemon, so it would all be okay if I just fainted it…Right…?

“TOGEPI USED METRONOME.

METRONOME FAILED.”

Oh, great! You worked ever other time!

“The countdown is 2”

Oh well, I still have two more tries. Despite knowing this, I began getting more and more nervous and scared.

“METRONOME FAILED”

“The countdown is 1” The game announced along with what sounded like static

Oh, come one! I guess I’ll just switch in my quilava, no problem.

“TOGEPI WILL NOT LEAVE YOU, MASTER”

“TOGEPI WILL NEVER HAVE TO LEAVE YOU AGAIN, MASTER”

Wait, what!? What kind of weird hack was this? All I did was train my other pokemon! She didn’t even leave my team!

“DON’T YOU WANT IT TO BE THAT WAY, MASTER?”

” NOW WE CAN BE WITH EACHOTHER UNTIL WE DIE!” What sounded like the happy chirp of a togepi came through the speakers as this text box came up.

“THE COUNTDOWN IS 0”

A loud noise came out of the speakers, sounding like static and a crumpled version of the song from before. With this, I could hear faint laughing right before I passed out.

When I awoke, I found that it was now exactly 12:00 A.M. Wow, I’d been out for a while. My head hurt like hell. I turned over and saw something in my hand. Checking it, I saw that it was a gameboy, open to the title screen of Crystal. I checked it, and saw that there was no ‘Continue’ option, only ‘New game’.
