So I was playing my Soul Silver game that I’d had for about a year now. I had bought an Action Replay and was hacking it almost every day, getting legendaries and pokémon not able to be obtained by any means but trade, which was out of the question for me. In my team, I had a Typhlosion, a Charizard, a Raichu, a shiny Umbreon, a Nidoking, and an Ampharos. All were level 100.
Inevitably, I became bored with being able to beat every opponent I came across in the game. I decided right then that I would reset my game, and I did. I chose a Cyndaquil again, since it’s my favorite starter pokémon. Being so used to hacking, I used the codes for things such as x900 Rare Candies and leveled Cynder, the Cyndaquil I chose, up to level 13 so I could at least battle with him a few times. Soon I had him evolve after battling many Pidgeys and Rattatas.
I realized that I still hadn’t gotten the egg from Mr. Pokemon, so I went ahead and retrieved it. This was when I used the hack to fill my Pokédex. I discovered a modifier code that allowed me to choose what pokémon I encountered, so I chose a Charmander. I captured one and named it Charcoal, putting it in the second spot of my team, between the egg and Cynder, who was now a Quilava.
I figured I could use the trigger buttons to chain the Charmander so I could get a shiny. This apparently didn’t work with the version I have, so I’d done all of that for nothing. I restarted the game (after saving) and put in a new code—one that made all wild and legendary pokémon shiny permanently. I wound up with a shiny Charmander, naming it Chimni.
Obviously, I was going to get more attached to this shiny Charmander. I battled with it in almost every encounter and trainer confrontation. Soon it evolved into a Charmeleon, at level 16. By now I had in my team Cynder the Quilava, Faust the shiny Flareon, Chimni the shiny Charmeleon, an egg…and Charcoal the Charmander.
I hadn’t used Charcoal in ages. All my battles were fought by Cynder and Chimni, my most powerful pokémon. Faust had snuck in a few times, and the egg had just hatched, so I was using an Exp. Share to level the Togepi up. Charcoal remained at level 6 in the very back of my team.
I didn’t think much of it. I mean, it was just a game, right? I would just wait and level him up later, that’s all. It wasn’t a big deal.
Then came the day I turned on my game and battled the Elite Four. Cynder was a Typhlosion, Chimni was a shiny Charizard—what I had been wanting for so long. By now I’d quit using the AR in-game, so all of my battles were fair in the sense that I wasn’t using any codes.
A defeated them all, one by one. The champion came and went down with a crash. I was the new champion.
I traveled into the Kanto region to see Professor Oak. He gave me the lecture and finally I got to choose my starter for the region. I was obviously going to choose a Charmander, since I have a thing for Fire-types. When I pressed A, the little window that held the sprite popped up. The only different thing was that the sprite was missing. The cry didn’t play, either, but in its place was an odd fuzzy sound. It was sort of like a Charmander’s cry, but with a bunch of noise and toned down.
I was a bit confused. I figured it was from all my previous hacking, but nothing like this had happened before. I exited from the window and tapped on my pokémon icon. All of the names had been changed to “RMEMBRME” and the levels were all the same—at level 6.
All except Charcoal. He was completely normal, but his level was just “???”.
Now I was freaked out. I went to Charcoal’s summary and checked him out. The sprite looked the same, except he was frowning and his eyes seemed to be outlined with a dark red. I still thought it was some kind of glitch, but the more I mulled it over, the more it was drawn away from just being a mere glitch. Glitches don’t cause sprites to frown, nor do they cause names and levels to be changed so oddly.
I exited the summary and went back to my pokémon. They were all still the same. I decided to keep playing, since the situation didn’t seem too bad. Just a bit creepy.
I wandered into some tall grass and encountered a pokémon. It was just a normal Rattata. I sent out Chimni, but when he emerged from the pokéball, he didn’t cry. He didn’t even move. I noticed something even more peculiar about him, just after the shiny animation finished—his eyes were hollow and black as night. They seemed to be surrounded by crimson as well.
I forced myself on.
I tapped the “fight” option, and he apparently had lost all of his moves but Perish Song…which wasn’t a possible move for him to learn. I didn’t teach him that.
I sighed and tapped on the odd move. The only thing that happened was that the Rattata turned black and then disintegrated. I sat there for a moment as the battle ended. Now I was freaked out for real.
The odd happenings in the game so far just interested me too much. I had to keep going…
I went back and checked my pokémon again. Their names were changed yet again. This time, though, Charcoal was missing. All that were left were my Typhlosion named GOTO, my Charizard named LAV, my new Togekiss named EN, my Flareon named DER, and my freshly-evolved Ampharos named TOWN. I caught the message immediately: “GO TO LAVENDER TOWN”.
I couldn’t stop myself from going. I used LAV to fly to Lavender Town, which for some reason was already able to be flown to. When I arrived, no music played. I checked my team again in case any more messages were there. Of course, there was. GOTO was now PO; LAV was now KE; EN was now MON; and TOWN was now TOWER. Again, I caught the message: “POKEMON TOWER”.
I followed the message’s demands, entering the tower. I travelled up all of the stairs, not encountering a single ghost or anything. When I came to the end, I found a Charmander sprite. I went up to it and pressed A to talk with it, if it had anything to say.
It did.
I entered a battle with it. When the Charmander slid across the screen like any other pokémon would, I recognized it on the spot. Its name was Charcoal, and it was level ???. He looked as though his eyes had been cut out, and the blood wiped clean—hollow and black as a pit. His nose was bleeding, but he wasn’t frowning anymore; he had no mouth to frown with. All that remained was an exposed lower jawbone. His flame was even out.
The battle music didn’t play. All that appeared was the text box that usually announced what you’ve encountered. It had another message for me.
“Why did you forget me?”
I pressed A for the next message, but nothing happened. It seemed like he was taking his time.
Another message popped up.
“I loved you… Didn’t you love me, too?”
I was tempted to reply. Of course I loved him. He was my pokémon… I began to feel bad, waiting for his next message.
“You never battled with me. You never looked at me. I waited all this time…”
The sprite moved now. It had the same animation as the normal Charmander would, but the cry was all fuzzy.
“YOU LET ME ROT”
The message shocked me. I almost said something, but another message stopped me.
“IT’S YOUR FAULT I HAVE BECOME THIS”
The messages kept coming. Every one sent a shiver up my spine.
“I’VE ROTTED AWAY”
“YOU LET ME DIE”
“ARE YOU HAPPY?”
“IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED???”
“LOOK AT ME”
“LOOK AT ME”
“LOOK AT ME!!!”
The sprite shook again, crying out the fuzzy, somewhat mournful, eerie noise.
I was almost trembling now, sweat dripping down my cheek.
There was one last message that popped up.
“REMEMBER ME”
Then the screen went black.
I left the console alone for a few months. When I finally built enough courage to start again, I didn’t hack it. I played through all the way to Kanto with normal training.
When I got to pick my starter again, I chose a Charmander. I put him in front and began training him like the others until we beat the Elite Four together, and finally the Champion.
As our names were entered into the Hall of Fame, I felt a sort of chill go up my spine as my Charizard was shown. His name flashed across the page first.
“CHARCOAL”
This constant rumble…
… It lowers me to my bare instincts. The instincts to maim, to rend, to slash apart skin to reach flesh. Food.
Food.
I haven’t had any since I was caught. Real food, that is. Not this mass-produced Pokemon feed. There’s no meat in it. It’s not enough to live on.
I’ve lost my dignity. My pride of being the most calm Scyther I know. I’m hungry. So hungry.
It makes me delirious with images of all the largest prey; Pidgeot, Sawsbuck, Tauros, Arbok, even the dangerous Rapidash I dared attack. I lust for their flesh. But I don’t just want it. I need it. I’m emaciated. It won’t take much longer for my carnivore requirements to take over me. Won’t take much more to make me die of starvation.
And I’m clumsy. I’ve lost my edge in battle. I doubt my Trainer’s noticed. He’s a novice, I think. If he were smarter, he’d feed his Pokemon right. I was only caught because of his Haunter’s Hypnosis. I don’t blame him too much. Mostly because I can’t concentrate on anything other than food now.
I haven’t spoken with any of his other Pokemon. He can’t have more than six, though I’ve never even met the others.
I don’t think about them much. When I do, it’s always in barbaric fits of thought; of hunger. Thinking about how much I could devour. Wondering what species they were. Wondering how long it will take to end their screams so I can eat in peace. Wondering if it’s neccessary to waste the time ending their life before digging in.
My stomach’s crying to be filled.
I can’t battle it. Not for much longer. I have the weapons to get it. I am built for the hunt. Built to get food. I can’t see. I’m dizzy. Starved. I have to eat. Or I’ll die. Have to get food…

I take in the taste of fresh blood as it wets my dry tongue. I tremble, even as I gorge myself, getting the sticky red stuff all over my face. The flesh isn’t even good, but I don’t care, I must be sated. I use my blades to sever limbs, chewing through everything edible, even splintering thick bone.
I eat and eat and eat until my frenzy starts to fade.
W-what am I doing? What am I eating?
I can’t wipe the blood from my eyes, but the face of the boy still manages to shock me. It shouldn’t, really. A memory hits me; bursting free from my tranquil Ball, raising my perfect blades with anticipation, the excitement of spraying red, the feel of warm skin waiting to be torn open. The last rumble of my stomach as its wish is granted. I slay my clueless Trainer. I killed him. Tore him to pieces.
I exclaim with mirthless animal joy.
But it’s not enough. The roaring Scyther instinct to kill has not quieted.
Luckily for me, his Pokemon must have sensed their Trainer’s demise, for one-by-one they free themselves. An Ariados- inedible, my mind says. Lairon- not worth the effort to break open. A Rapidash! What a treat!
Without a further thought, my legs and wings kick into action, carrying me with scythes raised and a crazed look at the unicorn. At the prey. The soft, filling flesh. The heat of the Pokemon’s flames cooking the Pokemon after it dies! The most precious meal.
And dangerous, but I can’t even stop myself; nearly blacking out in another frenzy of slashes. Still hungry. Hungry!
The wrathful whinny of the flaming Rapidash hardly registers to me. All I can hear is the subtle sound of teeth piercing skin.
My decapitated Trainer’s Pokemon are surrounding me, attacking mercilessly; with tears in their eyes. I have no sympathy. I have only hunger.
I slash at everything until I’m so covered in blood the heavenly smell threatens to make me pass out.
But it’s my blood too, dark and syrupy. The next thing I smell is charred skin. My wings have been scorched, and the rest of me, too, but I can’t feel it. I can’t feel the stinging burns, can’t feel the Poison Sting that’s affected me, can’t feel the bashed-in exoskeleton of my leg.
I fall, unable to stand, slashing wildly and even slicing myself up, but I can’t feel it.
Even as I lose consciousness from lacerations, I can’t feel it. Even as I know I die. I can’t feel it.
Only hunger.
Do you know the tales behind the items that came before TMs? The story called “Axe, Candle, Rope?” If not, find it and read it. It gives you some rare insight and things to think about.
I’m not writing this to advertise the story. But my own story is related to it, so please, find it, or you won’t understand the significance of these events.

I’m still a sucker for the original Pokemon games. I hoard copies of Red, Yellow, and Gold, the few old games that have survived the many playthroughs of my Pokemon-loving family. The other original first and second-gen games have been lost in time.
Cliched background aside, I’m quite protective of our surviving games. I still play them sometimes, to try and capture that feeling of being young again. I’d gotten into Nuzlocke challenges lately, and decided to do one of every generation, and since our FireRed had died a mysterious death and our two LeafGreens ran away, I chose to do my run on Red.
Like many people into creepypastas, I stay aware of what goes on in my Pokemon worlds, just in case something odd catches my eye.
Speaking of creepypasta, one in particular that always stayed in my mind was Axe, Candle, Rope. I would think about what went on between the producers in the first games’ many shady years of programming often, always wondering what else they did.
Which is why, while I was playing through Red on a nostalic and challenging venture, my jaw truly dropped whn this happened. My heart skipped a beat then began to hammer painfully in my chest. I almost cried out in disbelief.
I found an Escape Rope in a tree.
Where? To the east of Vermilion City, in that Route before Snorlax blocks your way. I don’t remember the exact route number. But there was a tree seperate from the rest, next to the gateway house, so, being the foraging person I am, I checked the tree, expecting some sort of vitamin or Ether; something you can’t just buy from a mart(therefore not defeating the purpose of checking for hidden items).
I didn’t expect what was obviously meant to symbolize a noose. In a tree. This was clear proof; proof of the wicked tricks the programmers made. And when getting rid of all the evidence of their Axe and the Candle, one little Escape Rope hiding in a tree could have easily been forgotten.
It scared me more than I’d like to admit; the mental image that ensued was not pleasant. I wonder how many people who played Red without knowing about the beta items have made the connection… Seeing a someone hanging from the tree?
What kind of sick programmer put that there?! That’s what I want to know. I don’t know how I never noticed it through any of my playthroughs of Red.
It makes me wonder if the tree is even there still in FireRed and LeafGreen. If that seemingly innocent little Escape Rope is still waiting to be found. I wish I could check, but at this moment, I don’t have either game.
Perhaps you do. Maybe you want to find out for yourself. I’m not too enthusiastic about investigating this time, even if I could, though I’m sure my curiosity would get the better of me eventually.

The little girl in there is Gardenias sister. She was supposed to be the Eterna gym leader. Her grandpa was so proud of her, and Gardenia was jealous. She then poisoned both of them, and that is why there are 2 ghosts in the old chateau. (thats where they lived) she then tryed to revive them, that is why there is and antidote in the garbage can. She ran away and became the gym leader. that’s why she’s scared to go in that house.

You remember Yellow, correct?
You know… Special Pikachu Edition?
Yes. Now, I have a very eerie, scary, and TRUE story to tell.
Pikachu’s cry always sounded distorted, like PiKaChU. What was weird, is my Pikachu, named Pika (I was a child okay?), never took liking to me. And I had never put him into the PC, and he had never fainted. I didn’t care though. Well, until I went to Lavender Town.
I was walking with Pika, when a text bubble comes up with, ‘Pika refuses to go to the Tower. Pika knows you will kill him there.’ Killing? Well, I thought it was just a side quest, since I had completed the game. “Okay, Pika, you know I wouldn’t.” ‘PIKA HAS DIED.’ “What?!” the game then showed a odd, red and sickly green colored close up of Pika. Pika had pixellized splatters of blood and had no eyes. He had been crying, but crying blood. his face was evil but sad. I heard an even more distorted and creepy PiIiKaAaPiI.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2youTS44Pms <- What it sounded like.
‘PIKA WANTS BLOOD.’ ‘PIKA WANTS CASSIE’S BLOOD.’
Cassie. Cassie is my real name. My name in Yellow was Skye. I haven’t played Yellow since, and I still have nightmares about Piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
It was normal Saturday. I was at GameStop, looking at games. I had wanted Pokemon Black or White, but, much to my disappointment, I didn’t have enough money for either one. Then, a certain game caught my eye. It was used, only a cartridge, and dirt-cheap, only two dollars and fifty cents. After I payed the right amount and got home, I looked at it closely. It depicted the word ‘Pokemon’, as usual, then it showed a large space and the words ‘Exploration Team’. Also on the cartridge was a dark green serpent-like silhouette masked by smoke that I could only depict as Rayquaza. Then I grinned. Rayquaza had always been my favorite Legendary Pokemon, second only to Zorua. After I popped it into my DSI; I turned it on imminently, not expecting anything new. I had only expected something like Explorers Of Sky but with more updated Pokemon.
If only I had known what horrors lay ahead as I touched the cartridge picture with my stylus, then I would have stopped the minute I put it in the game slot.
But I didn’t, so I went on with the game.
The introduction was the first thing that got me. It started like the Explorers Of Sky except Sky Shaymin was replacing with a smirking Rayquaza and the scenery was black and gray besides Rayquazas’ hovering body. Then, a couple of distorted Pokemon cries that were obviously that of Diglett, Chatot, Wigglytuff, Loudred, Corphish, Chimeco, Bidoof, Grovyle and Dusknoir blasted through the speakers, making my heart skip a couple of beats. The music started when the cries were finally over, and it sounded awfully familiar. With a pang I realized it was music from Lavender Town in Pokemon Red, Yellow and Blue. Once the music was over the option to start a new game, along with the wi-fi connection were on the screen. It didn’t show the usual graphics like a grovyle in the rain, but instead there was a black background with red splatters that looked like blood. Blood in a Pokemon game? I had thought in confusion. This must be a hack. Then I pressed the New Game option and saw that the quiz was still like the normal one in Explorers Of Sky.
Once I was done taking it, it had given me the usual female profile for a Charmander. I wasn’t expecting what the picture would look like. Its usual dark orange fur was burgundy and the yellow parts were a sickly mustard-like color.
The Charmanders’ expression was set in a mocking sneer, as if it were expecting me to scream at the sight of it. Shakily, I went to the partner selection. After scanning through the options, I finally settled for a Shinx, whom I named Xavier. It was white were the blue was, but other than that it looked like the normal Shinx from the game. Thankfully, the game had the usual intro. Once I got to the Guild, I saw that Xavier looked angry rather than determined as he would’ve been in the normal game, and that Chatot had literally kicked him out of the Guild.
Chatot: I’ve told you already, you can’t get into the Guild without a second member.
With that, Chatot walks back into the Guild and the gate closes, leaving one
ticked-off Xavier pacing near the grate at the entrance of the guild.
Xavier: I can’t believe they kicked me out! What am I, garbage?
With that comment, the box that showed his face hovering near the text box looked like he was frothing at the mouth with rage.
Xavier: If they want a second member, I’ll sure as heck give them a second member.
His expression was now mischievous, and he walked off from the Guild to the beach like the other game, except this time I was in the water instead of on the shore.
Xavier: What a stupid Charmander. Everyone knows Fire-types can’t swim.
I realized with a jolt that he was now looking at the sky, where an image of a storm cloud appeared. Lightning cracked, making Xavier jump a bit. He then headed for the water.
Xavier: I guess I should give her a hand, after all, she may be useful as a second member like that Chatot was talking about.
He dove into the water, then it cut to the inside of the water. It was black as ink, and powerful Carvanah were everywhere. Xavier bit my characters’ scruff, ignoring the swarming Carvanah and dragging her to the shore. Once they were back on shore, I noticed a red liquid flowing around my character and staining the sand.
Xavier: What a stupid, reckless Charmander. She should’ve at least thought before taking a swim.
?: …..ugh
My character stood up, grasping her bloody arm with her hand. Her expression was the same as what the main character looks like when it is first depicted on shore.
Xavier: What were you thinking, stupid?
?: Huh?
Once he explained that she had been in the water, a question mark appeared over her head.
?: I don’t remember.
Xavier: What’s your name, anyways, or do you not remember that, to?
?: hm..I think my name is..
Then it cut to the name selection screen. I chose the name ‘Coal’ and Xavier walked off.
Xavier: C’mon, Coal,let’s go.
Coal: Go where?
Xavier didn’t reply as they stopped in front of the Guild. I noticed that Chatot was in front of the guild with a giddy Wigglytuff.
Chatot: You may now join the Guild. Wigglytuff and I will lead you to were you can create a team name.
So I decided to follow them. We ended up in the familiar Guildmasters’ room, where I came up with name the team name ‘Venom’. Xavier, of course, thought that it was a stupid name, but Wigglytuff registered our team name anyways.
We got the Treasure Bag, Wonder Map, Explorer Badge, Attack Scarf and the Cobalt Bow. I gave the Attack Scarf to Xavier and the Cobalt Bow to me.
Then Chatot escorted us to our crew room and told us that training what start tomorrow so we’d better sleep early, blah blah blah.
The next day, Chatot woke us up instead of Loudred. I was thankful for that since I found him annoying as heck. Xavier and I got out of bed and I made my character walk outside of the crew rooms. Chatot lead us the rest of the way to the Outlaw Notice Board. Xavier had asked what the other board was for, but Chatot became flustered and said that he didn’t know. I was now suspicious of him as he gave us a piece of paper. It was not the Spoink mission, but instead it was a mission given to us by a Houndoom with a ???? reward. It was similar to the Spoink one, but said that there was an outlaw that had to be defeated in order to get back a Fire Pendant. It said nothing about what Pokemon the outlaw was, which I ignored. We were going on our first mission. Once we got to the dungeon it said that it was Forbidden Temple BF 1. Confused, I got to the staircase. Once we got to the 7th floor, a Primal Dialga waited for us. A necklace-like thing with a ruby-colored gemstone hanging off of it was laying on the floor behind him. He roared at us and the battle begun. To my surprise, I had the attacks Flamethrower, Fury Swipes, Fire Blast and even a more powerful Fire-type attack known as Blast Burn.
I had used all of them, and Dialga went down easily. With each hit, blood spurted from the Pokemon, and it became weaker, as if losing the will to live.
It fell over, blood pooling from around it, and then vanished into thin air, leaving a text box with the words;
You murderer….
I was shocked when the Pendant just flew at us and we disappeared as well. When we returned to the Guild, we were both horrified. All of the Pokemon were frozen in place, their eyes pitch black and dripping crimson, their bodies a dull gray. None of them would talk much, and if they did, all they would say would be
Do you feel better now that you’ve gotten out you hatred?
A chill went down my spine as I read the message from all of them. Houndoom was still in the guild, the only thing in color. Suddenly, Houndoom glowed and disappeared. In its place was one ticked-off Rayquaza.
Rayquaza: Do you feel better now? Look at all of the hate and destruction you have brought upon our brethren you worthless human.
Shaking, I pressed the A button, continuing the message.
Rayquaza: Goodbye, Cassie.
I gasped. How did it know my real name? Rayquaza used its Hyper Beam and it was all over. Our blood splattered on the screen. I turned off the game and took out the cartridge, throwing it in the road the next day while waiting for the bus. It had gotten crushed by a car, and ever since then, I had never picked up my Explorers Of Sky game again.
