“But I want it so BADDDD…”
“Deal with it.” My roommate said, dragging me away from the counter, where the glowing heart-gold and soul-silver merchandises were. As I walked away, my gaze were still fixed on the beautiful ho-oh and lugia box-art, glittering with such heavenliness.
“I can not NOT have soul silver!” I whined, as she brought me over to the second-hand games corner. “I’ve played every game except gold and silver, and I can not NOT play the remake of silver!!”
“37 pounds,” she said, “What makes you think, a student like you, can spend 37 pounds on a video game?”
I pouted.
She grabbed an old silver cartridge, and tossed it over. “Here, 3 pounds, there’s something you can afford. And I can give you my old gameboy colour. Now stop whining and hurry up, I want to go top up my phone.”
I grumbled, taking another look at the stupid cartridge, retro pokemon… doesn’t seem like a bad idea. I turned the scratched plastic over and frowned, the title of the game was crossed out messily and beside it wrote: “Pokemon Silver version Forgotten Bronze”
Sweet! A Hacked game!
I hurriedly smacked the game into the good old gameboy colour and started. There was no starting music, or title. Just as I’d expect from a thrilling hack. There was one saved file, out of curiosity, I clicked it to know my previous trainer better.
I see gold’s sprite. He was in a dark cave, upon walking around, I don’t see any other trainers. Getting a bit bored, I opened the menu and checked his stats: It was a boy alright, he had Gold’s sprite but his name was Bronze. No money, No Badges, nothing in the bag except an escape rope.
I was getting a bit bored, hoping his pokemons wouldn’t let me down.
A lonesome party with only a level 5 cyndaquil with some glitched up name. Why cyndaquil? I rolled my eyes, I swear, it’s gotta be the most overrated pokemon ever. I checked it’s stats, Unlike other G/S sprites, this cyndaquil has no fire on its back, actually, no torso at all. Its only move was endure and frustration.
It’s probably just some glitch, I shrugged it off.
I walked around some more, there was no music, no sounds although I turned the volume up. Suddenly, the screen blinked and flashed red, and I was into a battle scene with some wild pokemon. Finally! Some action!
A sprite of some glitched-up pikachu appeared. It’s glitched up so badly, I can only recognize the deformed ears and a bloody gaping mouth as it its screaming.
PIKACHU WANTS TO BATTLE!!
Strange… it’s a wild pokemon, right?
The choice box came up, carefully, I chose Endure, just in case the pikachu’s too strong.
CYNDAQUIL USED ENDURE!!
PIKACHU USED TACKLE!!
I bit my nails as the HP went down by half. “Endure!” I said to myself, “Endure it Cyndaquil!”
As I clicked on the endure, the back sprite of cyndaquil flashed red twice, and seemed to tremble.
CYNDAQUIL USED ENDURE!!
The HP gone down by another half as the pikachu strikes again.
It’s no use enduring anymore, who cares if I get to send back to the next pokecenter? I clicked on the Frustration.
The black and white cyndaquil sprite flashed red again, three times, and shook violently.
I’M SCARED…
I freaked out, the cyndaquil continued to shake violently, flashing. The cyndaquil seemed to open it’s eyes, it’s red pupils staring straight at me.
When the choice menu came back on, I was relieved. I clicked on the Endure option straight away.
CYNDAQUIL USED ENDURE!!
IT FAILED!!
PIKACHU USED TACKLE!!
…
CYNDAQUIL FAINTED!!
The whole screen flashed red, once, twice, three times… as we return to the map, my cyndaquil appeared before my sprite.
Half-bodied, crying cyndaquil.
A text box popped up:
USING ME AS A SHIELD FOR YOU
HAVE YOU NO SHAME
I started sweating, feeling uneasy and dizzy. The battle music played again, this time quick and low.
It was the trainer versus the cyndaquil. I shuddered as I saw the cyndaquil’s sprite, just as glitched and messed-up as the pikachu’s sprite. With the same, gaping, bloody mouth. It’s half-body looked like he was dragging himself towards the trainer.
CYNDAQUIL ATTACKED!!
I clicked on attack.
TRAINER STRUGGLED!!
Cyndaquil’s HP gone down by a half.
CYNDAQUIL USED FRUSTRATION!!
Cyndaquil’s sprite shook, and shook, and shook. Until the whole screen flashed red, bloody red.
IT’S SUPER EFFECTIVE!!
I felt a lump in my throat as the trainer’s HP gone down to a mere 3 Points.
TRAINER STRUGGLED!!
But I got the faster of it, cyndaquil’s HP gone right down.
CYNDAQUIL FAINTED!!
As we return to the cave again, in front of gold’s sprite, was the sprite of a tomb stone from lavender town. I moved my shaking fingers to click on A.
It came up with an option:
USE ESCAPE ROPE?
>YES
>NO
Without hesitating, I chose Yes.
It all happened so fast, I felt like I was being hung, a thick, invisible string seemed to strangle me. I saw nothing but black and white as I dropped the Gameboy on to the floor.

“Luna? Luna!”
I heard my roommate’s voice echo from above, I opened my eyes and saw her.
“Thank god…” she sighed in relief.
I opened my mouth to speak, but a sharp pain reached my neck. My roommate, being my best friend, understood what I meant.
“When I came back from shopping, I saw you strangling yourself on the bed. I thought you were trying to suicide or something, so I stopped you and called the ambulance.” She explained.
After recovering from shock, I’d told her I wanted to go to the toilet. Out of curiosity, I took the bandages off my neck, too see if it was just a dream. But a silent scream came from my aching throat as I saw…
The bloodied, rope marks.
